Window Air Conditioner Supply and Installation

Window air conditioners are a straightforward, cost-effective solution for cooling a single room. The unit sits in a window frame or a purpose-cut wall aperture, with the cooling coil facing inward and the condenser exhausting heat to the outside. They are well suited to individual rooms, small offices, and situations where a full split system is not required. We supply and install window AC units across London and Essex, with a free site visit before any work begins.

Where Are Window Units Installed?

Window air conditioners are designed to cool a single room or enclosed space. They are self-contained, with the cooling and condensing components in one housing, and are ideal where:

  • Only one room needs cooling and a full split system is not warranted
  • Budget is the primary consideration and the room size is manageable
  • No external wall space is available for a split system outdoor condenser
  • A short-term or rental property solution is needed
  • Server rooms and equipment rooms with a single accessible wall or window

Window units are not suitable for rooms without a window or suitable external wall, and they are less efficient and less quiet than modern split systems for the same capacity. If you are unsure which type is right for your situation, we can advise during the site visit. See our full AC installation service or the London and Essex pages.

Benefits of Window Air Conditioners

Window units offer a practical, self-contained cooling solution for single rooms where a full split system is not required or not possible. The main advantages are:

  • Lower upfront cost: Window units are significantly less expensive to purchase and install than a split or multi-split system, making them a practical choice for single rooms or budget-conscious situations.
  • Self-contained, no separate outdoor unit: The entire system is contained in one housing, with no need for a separate outdoor condenser on the wall or roof. This removes planning and location considerations for the outdoor unit.
  • Straightforward to install: Installation is faster and less disruptive than a split system, typically completed within a few hours once the aperture or window position is confirmed.
  • Effective for single rooms: A correctly sized window unit provides reliable cooling for the room it serves, maintaining comfortable temperatures during warm weather.
  • Suitable where split systems cannot be fitted: In properties where there is no suitable position for a split system outdoor unit, a window installation may be the only viable air conditioning option.

Frequently asked questions about window air conditioning

Can a window AC unit be installed through a wall instead of a window?
Yes. Where a window is not available or is not a suitable position, we can cut an aperture through a suitable external wall. We assess the wall construction at the site visit to confirm this is feasible and advise on the appropriate position for the unit, condensate drainage, and external finish.
How much cooling can a window unit provide?
Window units are rated by capacity, typically measured in BTUs. The right capacity depends on the size of the room, the ceiling height, the amount of window glazing, and the direction the room faces. We confirm the appropriate unit capacity at the site visit before recommending a specific model, to ensure the unit can cool the space effectively.
Are window AC units noisy?
Window units are generally noisier than modern split systems because both the compressor and the fan are housed in the same unit inside the room. The noise level varies between models and manufacturers. If noise is a key concern, a wall-mounted split system is usually quieter at occupant level, as the compressor is in the external condenser unit.
Do window air conditioners provide heating as well as cooling?
Some window AC units include a reverse-cycle heating function, but not all do. If you need heating as well as cooling, confirm this requirement when we carry out the site visit so we can specify a suitable unit. For whole-property heating and cooling, a split or multi-split system is generally a more efficient and effective solution.
Do I need planning permission to install a window AC unit?
In most cases, installing a window unit does not require planning permission. However, if the property is in a conservation area or is listed, external alterations including AC installations may require consent. For properties where a wall aperture is needed, permitted development rights apply in most cases, but we confirm the position at the survey stage and advise if any restrictions apply.
